FYI, I was finally asked for my ID for the first time on my trip (more than a week in) -- not at a bar or ferry terminal, but at a surf shop in Lahaina when I used my debit card to buy a t-shirt. It's nice to know my economic assets are being protected. Too bad I look too old to card.

Maui is paradise for those who never want to leave their resort. On Lanai, the upcountry restaurants and shops are charming and a great place to mingle with locals. You tend to drive up from the beach and back down a couple times a day, creating a close connection with the island.
